Two New Jets to Join NOAA Fleet

August 4, 2024

NOAA recently announced that it will purchase another aircraft to help support its forecasts, research, and missions. The G550 fully modified aircraft will join the Hurricane Hunters, and fly right above hurricanes and tropical storms, collecting highly detailed information about the storms.

The information is then used to refine forecasts looking at the track and intensity of hurricanes. More accurate forecasts can provide a longer lead time for municipalities and people to prepare for oncoming storms.

The first G550 will join NOAA’s fleet in 2025, with the second in 2028. Other jets in NOAA’s fleet include Kermit and Miss Piggy, which are WP-3D Orion aircraft that fly into hurricanes, including through the eyewall. Another member of the fleet is Gonzo, a Gulfstream-IV aircraft that soars high above storms, observing the surrounding environment and their movements.
