Knowing what the weather will bring is crucial for many. Despite weather forecasts that continue to improvise with increasing knowledge and technology, there remain places where weather can be difficult to forecast. If you want or need to know what the weather will be like tomorrow or in the next few days, avoiding these locations can be important to your business or personal needs.
At ForecastWatch, we’ve done the legwork for you, analyzing and ranking nearly 2000 locations worldwide by the capability to predict weather for the next three days.
The highest overall average accuracies above 75% were found over the northern coastlines of South America, from Peru north to the Caribbean coastline to the tropical Atlantic coastline of northern Brazil, southern Central America, the Lesser Antilles and part of the Greater Antilles, extreme western Africa, eastern Central Africa, the southern part of the Arabic Peninsula, southern India, and most of tropical Southeast Asia.
In general, the most accurate combinations of forecasts and persistence were found in the tropics. There were also some areas on the west coasts of continents which are exposed to large oceans to their west that have relatively high predictability when compared to other locations at the same latitude.
Combined accuracy of less than 55% was found along the southern Chile coast, most of Canada, extreme northern Alaska, much of Siberia, extreme northwest China, northeast Kazakhstan, and much of Mongolia. The least accurate combinations of forecasts and persistence were general in polar and/or inland locations.
The rest of the world was between these two extremes, with generally a gradual increase in accuracy as one gets closer to the tropics and to large bodies of water.
