Most Accurate Weather App Identified (Sort-of)

January 30, 20250

As weather apps on mobile devices become more and more popular, the public is quick to make judgments on which apps are and are not accurate. That is of course, in their own opinion, and based on their interpretation of what the app is saying. However, sometimes those interpretations are a misunderstanding of what the app creators and forecasters are trying to portray, creating a false expectation.

Nonetheless, the University of Reading’s Department of Meteorology was commissioned to identify which weather apps are actually the most accurate. The study was conducted over a two week period at the end of August and start of September, for Reading, England and Narberth, South Wales. The weather apps investigated in the study were BBC Weather, the Met Office, Apple Weather, The Weather Channel, and AccuWeather.

When looking at “nowcasts”, or weather within the next hour, AccuWeather was the most accurate, followed by The Weather Channel in second, BBC Weather and Apple Weather tied for third, and the Met Office as the least accurate in the study.

For short term forecasts, or forecasts for about 7 hours in the future, the Met Office was actually the most accurate, followed by Apple Weather, The Weather Channel, AccuWeather, and finally BBC Weather in order from most to least accurate.

The best overall daily forecaster was The Weather Channel. AccuWeather was second overall, followed by the Met Office, then Apple Weather, and finally with BBC Weather in last place again.

Obviously this study was done over a short period of time and for a small region, and likely cannot be compared to other regions in the world. However, that is where we can help!
