At the end of 2024, AccuWeather closed a deal to acquire TOA Systems, Inc. TOA Systems, Inc. is a premier provider of lightning detection hardware and one of the few global lightning networks in existence.

This kind of technology is crucial because lightning is a significant weather hazard. Just last year, more than two billion strikes hit the ground globally. It is estimated that more than 10,000 people lose their lives each year around the world due to lightning strikes. Lightning strikes are also costly, causing an estimated $1 billion in total economic loss each year in the U.S. due to property damage, forest fire spread, and infrastructure disruptions.

The AccuWeather Lightning Network™ will provide real-time lightning alerts, detailed risk analysis, and safety recommendations tailored to specific locations designed for clients.
