Our Best Places reports are unique in that they use a combination of forecast accuracy from various weather providers and an assumption that the current weather will continue over the next several days to determine locations where the weather is most and least predictable in the short term. This information can benefit your business if you need to know where the weather is most predictable, help you conduct your outdoor activities if you live in a place with unpredictable weather, or even help you plan your next vacation.
For our United States report, we analyzed and ranked 793 locations by the capability to predict high temperatures, low temperatures, and precipitation for the next three days.
The most accurate combinations of forecasts and persistence by state (or territory) were in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and Florida. The least accurate combinations of forecast and persistence by state were in Montana, South Dakota, and Vermont. In our full report, we provide a breakdown of the top ten and bottom ten cities for the most and least accurate forecasts overall and by forecast metric, as well as an explanation as to why each location scored higher or lower.
For the first time ever, we have created an interactive ArcGIS StoryMap to complement our report and allow you to inspect locations on your own! The StoryMap also includes slider maps to compare forecast versus persistence for various metrics.
